Photography themes: PhotoFocus vs Fotografie vs Pixgraphy

Compare PhotoFocus, Fotografie, and Pixgraphy for photo collections, gallery dependencies, classic editing, Pro licenses, and maintenance.

A photography website can look impressive in a demo and still be difficult to maintain. The photographer needs to add complete collections, choose sensible crops, explain the work, and guide visitors toward licensing or inquiries. A theme should support that sequence without forcing every image into the same shape or making the homepage the only usable route into the archive.

PhotoFocus, Fotografie, and Pixgraphy are three photography-oriented WordPress themes with free downloads and optional paid extensions or editions. This comparison concentrates on organizing and presenting photo collections, rather than the broader service portfolio covered in our creative portfolio theme comparison. Official sources were checked on October 13, 2026; no measured speed, conversion, or image-quality results are claimed.

Photography themes and the gallery boundary

The theme supplies presentation: headers, archives, layouts, typography, and selected image sections. A gallery plugin or content-type plugin may supply collection management. A client-proofing service may supply private selections and delivery. WooCommerce may supply print sales. These are separate responsibilities, even when a demo makes them look like one integrated product.

The three free packages inspected are classic themes with PHP templates, not native FSE packages. Block-editor support can help with captions and article content, but it does not give you Site Editor control of all templates. If editing the whole site with native blocks is central to your project, see our native block theme comparison before committing to this workflow.

Theme Collection approach Free starting point Paid and maintenance consideration
PhotoFocus Photography homepage with multiple presentation sections Header media, featured content, and Customizer controls Classic Pro page lists $59.99; distinguish the separate Blocks offering
Fotografie Minimal image-led publication Focused photography layout and featured-content workflow Pro lists $59.99 with one-year manual renewal access
Pixgraphy Photography archive with optional Plus controls Classic theme with WooCommerce compatibility Plus plugin starts at $59; free theme last updated June 2025

PhotoFocus

PhotoFocus suits a photographer who needs several ways to introduce a collection. Its official free-theme page describes header media, a featured slider, featured content, hero content, and layout controls. These are presentation tools for selecting and sequencing work. They are useful when a homepage should introduce a landscape series, a current exhibition, and a recent photo essay without showing the entire library at once.

The same documentation stresses featured images and supplies recommended dimensions for different areas. That is an operational requirement: a photograph that works as a square thumbnail may not work as a wide header. Keep a focal point and alternate crop for important work. Do not assume a slider can substitute for a navigable collection page with captions and a permanent URL.

For additional content types, Catch Themes points to its Essential Content Types plugin. That dependency should be recorded if you use portfolio records instead of ordinary pages or posts. The advantage is a recognizable content structure. The limitation is that another plugin now owns part of the archive, and theme switching requires checking how those records are presented.

The classic PhotoFocus Pro page displayed $59.99 and a one-year manual-renewal subscription. A separate PhotoFocus Blocks Pro page describes an FSE-oriented product with a required FSE Pro plugin. Treat this as a workflow and package distinction, not evidence that the free classic theme automatically gains native template editing. Obtain confirmation of the intended download before buying.

Catch Themes’ terms allow broad GPL use but provide one automatic-update license key per premium purchase. Continued downloads and updates require active access after the first year; a guaranteed renewal discount was not established. The free version was 2.1.2, updated June 4, 2026. Choose it for its section-based presentation, with a clear plan for gallery and content-type ownership.

Fotografie

Fotografie is a more restrained option for a photographer who wants the images and accompanying text to lead. Its official page presents a minimal photography theme, and the free directory package was version 2.5.5, updated October 10, 2026. A recent update is a useful maintenance signal, though it does not establish compatibility with every gallery or commerce plugin.

A minimal layout is valuable when each collection needs a short introduction, a sequence of photographs, and consistent navigation back to the archive. It can also reduce editorial decisions: you spend less time arranging promotional sections and more time selecting the work. The limitation is the same restraint. If the site needs complex exhibition schedules or several commercial funnels on the homepage, confirm which features are included before choosing it for appearance alone.

Fotografie Pro lists additional presentation controls including header media, portfolio, slider, typography, and WooCommerce options. Its displayed price was $59.99 with a one-year manual-renewal subscription. Use the free-versus-Pro matrix for the exact control you need; a general feature paragraph can describe the wider product family rather than the free download. We do not count Pro as a fourth theme.

The licensing distinction matches PhotoFocus: using GPL theme code across sites is different from receiving automatic updates and support for multiple domains. Budget a separate supported activation when needed, and ask for the future renewal amount. A client-proofing portal or private download service is not established by the photography label. Choose and cost those tools independently.

Fotografie’s main strength is a focused publishing experience. Its main constraint is that richer collection management still needs deliberate planning. Keep captions, copyright statements, and series introductions in durable content fields, and avoid hiding essential context solely inside theme-specific homepage settings.

Pixgraphy

Pixgraphy offers a photography-oriented classic theme from Theme Freesia. The official page confirms multiple layouts, social links, WooCommerce compatibility, and a demo-import plugin. This is a reasonable starting point for an image archive whose owner wants familiar theme controls and may later sell prints. Commerce support describes theme presentation; payment, fulfillment, and customer delivery still belong to the store system.

The paid path is a plugin rather than a completely separate theme. Pixgraphy Plus expands controls such as typography, colors, footer options, and slider settings. The listed plans were Personal $59, Business $79, and Developer $99. The terms separate unrestricted GPL use from supported automatic-update activations: Personal provides one, Business five, and Developer unlimited. The exact renewal charge was not confirmed, so treat those figures as listed purchase prices rather than a verified multi-year total.

Maintenance deserves attention here. The free theme’s directory and vendor page showed version 1.4.1, updated June 3, 2025; the Plus page showed an August 2025 update. That older cadence does not prove the theme is broken, but it makes staging verification particularly relevant on a current WordPress and PHP stack. Ask the vendor about the current supported combination and any planned updates before relying on the paid extension.

Demo importing requires Theme Freesia’s importer. Install only the components the selected layout actually needs, and review imported pages before combining them with your existing archive. No verified Elementor starter collection or native FSE entitlement was established for Pixgraphy. Its strength is a conventional photography theme with optional controls; its limitation is the maintenance and extension commitment you must assess before launch.

Choose with a real collection and an operating budget

Prepare one series with portrait, landscape, and panoramic work. Include captions of different lengths and a collection introduction. On staging, inspect the archive, individual collection, image enlargement, keyboard navigation, and a small phone screen. Confirm that meaningful photographs remain accessible without depending on autoplay. These are recommended acceptance steps, not tests we performed on the three themes.

Keep web-delivery images separate from archival originals. Decide how responsive sizes and compression will be managed, and use descriptive alt text where the image conveys information. If you sell prints, budget WooCommerce extensions and operational fees independently; our WooCommerce foundation comparison provides a useful second-stage checklist.

Choose PhotoFocus for a homepage that introduces several image-led sections, after resolving the classic-versus-Blocks purchase path. Choose Fotografie for a restrained collection publication. Choose Pixgraphy when its classic controls and Plus model fit your needs, provided the older maintenance dates are acceptable after verification. None is a documented all-in-one substitute for client proofing, image delivery, and commerce.
