A restaurant visitor usually arrives with a practical question: what is on the menu, when are you open, where are you, and can I book or order? A theme that hides those answers behind a dramatic slideshow can create more work for both customers and staff. The right choice depends on whether the website mainly informs diners or also operates an ordering workflow.
Auberge, Restaurant and Cafe, and GloriaFood Restaurant offer three different approaches to that problem. All have free WordPress theme downloads, but their dependencies differ. This comparison uses official sources checked October 13, 2026. We have not installed the themes, placed orders, tested booking reliability, or measured performance.
Restaurant presentation is separate from restaurant operations
A menu layout is not an order-management system. A reservation section is not necessarily a booking engine with capacity limits. WooCommerce support is not a restaurant delivery scheduler. Define which service receives an order or booking and who monitors it before choosing a theme around those labels.
The three free packages inspected are classic PHP-template themes, not native FSE themes. You can maintain page content separately from the site’s theme controls, but do not expect complete Site Editor ownership of the header and templates. If the project calls for a general foundation rather than a restaurant-specific structure, compare our business WordPress themes as well.
| Theme | Best fit | Operational dependency | Cost and maintenance caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auberge | Restaurant information and structured menus | Jetpack for documented food-menu functionality; booking is separate | Free; directory updated September 2025 |
| Restaurant and Cafe | Section-based restaurant homepage | Reservation and commerce functions require the relevant tools | Free start; Pro listed at $59 or $149 lifetime access |
| GloriaFood Restaurant | Restaurant using the GloriaFood ordering service | GloriaFood plugin and service account | Free theme; paid service options; directory warns about maintenance age |
Auberge
Auberge takes a content-oriented approach. The directory listing identifies Beaver Builder support, Jetpack nested food menus, WebMan Amplifier recipe support, a header slideshow, and customizable colors and layouts. These are distinct integrations: menus, recipes, and builder-created pages should not be treated as one inseparable feature of the theme.
The WebMan Design product page explains that food-menu functionality comes from Jetpack and that booking functionality requires another solution. This is useful for a restaurant that wants a structured menu independent of decorative pages. It also means the menu system is a dependency. Confirm its current availability and configuration before committing the restaurant’s complete menu to it.
The strength is a clear path for separating dishes and menu sections from the presentation. A restaurant can give each section a durable place rather than publishing only a PDF. The limitation is setup and upkeep across the theme and its supporting plugin. If the staff wants nothing more than a short editable menu page, a more elaborate content type may be unnecessary.
Auberge is currently presented as free, despite the product page retaining the Auberge Plus name in its heading. We did not establish a current paid subscription or included premium booking service. Do not infer a recurring theme license from that legacy name. Hosting, booking services, and any paid builder edition still cost separately.
The directory package was 3.0.2, updated September 4, 2025, while the vendor page showed 3.0.3. That version mismatch and the older update date justify checking the exact download and current WordPress/PHP compatibility on staging. Beaver Builder support is documented; Elementor starter sites and WooCommerce support were not confirmed by the sources reviewed. Auberge is best considered for menu presentation, with commerce and booking assessed independently.
Restaurant and Cafe
Restaurant and Cafe from Rara Themes offers a homepage organized around familiar restaurant information. Its directory description lists banner, feature, About, services, testimonials, restaurant menu, reservation, and blog sections. It also identifies WooCommerce readiness. Version 1.2.6 was updated February 6, 2026.
This structure suits an owner who wants an informative front page: a short introduction, featured dishes, opening context, and a route to reserve. Its advantage is a ready-made hierarchy rather than a blank builder canvas. The limitation is that homepage sections can become the only home for important information. Maintain a complete menu page, contact page, and clear holiday-hours notice so visitors can reach those details directly.
The free product page and Pro page distinguish the broader premium toolkit. Pro advertises additional homepage sections, ordering controls for sections, page templates, and demo importing. A named reservation area is presentation capability; it does not prove that capacity management, confirmation messages, or calendar integration are included. Ask which plugin implements the booking process shown in the chosen demo.
Pro displayed $59, with a $149 lifetime-license-and-support alternative. Under the vendor licensing policy, a standard premium purchase provides one supported domain and one year of updates and support. GPL use on other sites does not automatically provide multiple supported activations. The exact renewal charge was not confirmed, and the policy’s warning about settings access after expiry deserves clarification before an annual purchase.
WooCommerce can support sales, but restaurant ordering introduces its own requirements: preparation windows, pickup or delivery areas, unavailable dishes, minimum spend, and order acknowledgment. None should be assumed from a WooCommerce-ready label. Choose this theme for its information architecture, then select the operational plugin or service that actually meets the restaurant’s needs.
GloriaFood Restaurant
GloriaFood Restaurant is the most service-centered candidate. The directory page states that the theme uses the GloriaFood plugin for online orders and table reservations. Here, the theme is a visual front end for a separate service relationship. A working WordPress installation alone is not the complete system; the restaurant must configure its account, menu, and order-taking process.
The service model can be convenient if the restaurant already uses GloriaFood and wants a consistent web entry point. It avoids selecting an unrelated ordering system simply because a demo shows a cart. The constraint is dependence on that service and its operating workflow. Determine how staff receive and accept orders, what happens during internet interruptions, and which data can be exported before making it central to daily trade.
The official service pricing page describes free core ordering and optional paid services. Online or credit-card payment integration was listed at US$29 per month; advanced promotional marketing at US$19 per month. Taxes and payment-provider charges need separate confirmation. These are service fees, not theme upgrade prices, and the free theme does not remove them.
Maintenance is a significant limitation. The directory showed version 1.0.8, last updated September 11, 2024, with an explicit warning that the theme has not been updated in over two years and may have compatibility issues. That does not establish a specific vulnerability, but it makes this a conditional choice for a new production site. Ask the vendor for current theme support or evaluate whether the service’s plugin can be used with a better-maintained presentation theme.
We did not confirm native FSE templates, an Elementor starter library, or a WooCommerce-based ordering backend for this theme. Its documented route is GloriaFood. Choose it only when that route matches the restaurant’s operations and the maintenance concern has been resolved, rather than because the combined demo makes ordering look effortless.
Choose around the staff workflow
Prepare the menu in ordinary readable text, with clear prices and dietary information approved by the restaurant. Keep opening hours and the location visible without opening a gallery. Then map each action to its actual destination: telephone, booking provider, ordering service, or contact form. Give staff a clear owner for every request channel.
On staging, check a long menu category, a temporary closure notice, and the mobile navigation. Test booking or ordering in the provider’s supported sandbox where available, rather than creating accidental live transactions. If you plan to use WooCommerce, consult our WooCommerce theme comparison and budget restaurant-specific extensions separately.
Choose Auberge for documented menu-content integrations and an information-first site, after resolving its version discrepancy. Choose Restaurant and Cafe for a familiar section-based homepage with a clearer paid support path. Choose GloriaFood Restaurant only for an established GloriaFood workflow and after addressing its old theme-maintenance date. The right restaurant theme makes the essential information easy to update while leaving operational responsibilities explicit.
